Dr. Chinea of CLLAS to speak at CUNY Dominican Studies conference commemorating the 500th anniversary of the first slave revolt in the Americas, Dec. 2nd and 3rd
Dr. Jorge L. Chinea, director of the Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies (CLLAS), will speak at a conference hosted by the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute. The virtual conference will take place on December 2 and 3, 2021 and is free of charge. CLLAS is a sponsor of the conference.
Tiitled "Struggle for Freedom in La Española: Commemorating the 500th Anniversary of the First Slave Revolt in the Americas," the conference seeks to remember and honor the anniversary of a transcendental moment that marked forever the history of resistance of Black people in the New World. Dr. Chinea will participate in a panel tentatively titled “Exploring Relationships Among Captives in La Española” with other noted scholars representing various disciplines.
Founded in 1992 and housed at The City College of New York, the Dominican Studies Institute of the City University of New York (CUNY DSI) is the nation's first university-based research institute devoted to the study of people of Dominican descent in the United States and other parts of the world.
